We are trying something new this year for our Midweek Lenten Worship. Each of the next five Wednesdays we will have "Lent at Lunch," a 45-minute Facebook Live gathering beginning at 12:00 noon. The theme for these services is what in Christianity needs to stay and what needs to go. This theme was inspired by the Lenten emphasis on repentance and renewal. I began by listing five things that I believe should stay and go in Christianity. I then asked the friends and members of Holy Cross to come up with their own lists. I received several very thoughtful replies. Based on what I came up with and the responses I received, here is the list of what we will be talking about.
Date Stay Go
2-24 Jesus/grace God of wrath/religious rules
3-3 sin/forgiveness perfectionism
3-10 community rugged individualism/self help
3-17 charity/justice navel gazing/institutional survival
3-24 narrative/story/Scripture biblical literalism/weaponizing the Bible
Instead of a typical sermon, I have invited a good friend of mine, Pastor Mike Ostrom, to be my conversation partner. After some broad discussion of each topic, we will try to recommend some practical applications to daily life. We are also hoping that those viewing will participate by sending in questions and comments through Facebook Live.
