In the early part of January, you will notice that we continue to sing Christmas Carols and the decorations are still up. You would think that everything would be taken down on the 26th of December! This is where “The Twelve Days of Christmas” seem to have significance.
According to Katie Bourque's & Annie O’Sullivan's article, "The Interesting History Behind the 'Twelve Days of Christmas' Song'" in Good Housekeeping (and, of course, scholarly sources), the twelve days of Christmas begin December 25 and end January 6: 12 days! Thus, our music continues through to January 4 this year. The nice thing about “after” Christmas is the ability to enjoy singing those carols without the stress of “before,” if you know what I mean. I think I rather appreciate those four calling birds, three french hens, two turtle doves, and a partridge in a pear tree! It’s a cliché, but why not keep Christmas in your heart year-round?
After our Christmas break, our choirs and music worship teams begin meeting again to rehearse for the upcoming seasons of the church year: Epiphany, Lent, Easter, & Pentecost. There are fun pieces that we are doing, and I can’t wait for you to hear them.
Most exciting is Reconciling Sunday, February 8, 2026, when the River City Mixed Chorus will be performing during the service. Mark your calendar. We are looking forward to hosting the chorus and celebrating as a Reconciling Congregation.
Nothing drab about January. It might be cold, but I know that it is a promise that Spring is around the corner. Stay warm, and sing loud!
